Rice Bran Oil Refining Process

Refining of Ricebran Oil

For the physical refining of Rice bran oil following processing steps takes place.

  • Degumming
  • Pre Bleaching
  • Dewaxing
  • Winterization (Optional)
  • Post Bleaching
  • Deodorization

Degumming of Rice Bran Oil

  • Degumming eliminates phospholipids so as to enhance its physical stability. The process is necessary also to facilitate further steps in refining.
  • Phospholipids can treat dark coloured oil and they can also serve as precursors of oil off -flavor. Free fatty acids, pigments and other impurities are also partially removed by degumming.
  • The impurities have to be removed in the early refining stage for two main reasons
    • As these cause high refining losses because of their emulsifying properties
    • They decompose, and darken the oil because of their thermal instability.

Types of Degumming

  • Acid degumming
  • Enzymatic Degumming

Specification of Degummed Oil

  • FFA ( As oleic acid )
  • Same as raw oil
  • Phosphorus content
  • 30 ppm max
  • Moisture
  • 0.1% max

Pre Bleaching Of Rice Bran Oil

  • “Bleaching” is a process of selective removal of pigments and impurities by the physical and chemical interaction of an adsorbent with an oil or fat to improve its quality.
  • This process refers to the art of removing
    • Colour pigments
    • Dirt, Trace metals
    • Removal of polycyclic Aromatic compounds
    • Phospholipids

Mectech's Bleaching Advantage

  • Mectech's customized design of bleacher eliminates mechanical agitation. Thus bleaching is achieved optimally in terms of moisture content leading to best results.
  • Saves power consumption for the system.
  • Low bleaching earth consumption.

Dewaxing of Rice Bran Oil

Dewaxing of oil is a process of eliminating higher melting point constituents like waxes or triglycerides from oil by gradually cooling vegetable oils and separating saturated glycerides from the solvent. This is generally employed for oils in salad dressings and in Bio-industry. Most winterized popular oils are Rice Bran oil, Cottonseed oil, Sesame oil and Sunflower oil which has a high content of waxes, Saturated fatty acids and lipids.

Mectech’s Dewaxing Advantage

  • Crystallizer and cooling system designed so efficiently which allows the nucleation even in high temperature.
  • Once the nuclei forms in higher temperature the crystal size became large below equilibrium temperature.
  • Agitators designing and speed are so special which does not allows mechanical disturbance during the crystallization process.

Post Bleaching of Rice Bran Oil

  • This process refers to the art of removing
    • Colour pigments
    • Dirt, Trace metals
    • Removal of polycyclic Aromatic compounds
    • Phospholipids

Deodorization Of Rice Bran Oil

Deodorization achieves vacuum stripping by passing a specific amount of a stripping agent (usually steam) for a specific time through hot oil at low pressure. The mainly a physical process removes various volatile components. However, some chemical, thermal effects may also occur due to the high temperatures achieved.

  • Deodorization is combination of two different effects on oil

Process Steps: Deodorization

Deodorization is a multi-step process comprising

  • De-aeration
  • Heating
  • Deodorization cum De-acidification
  • Cooling of the oil

Specification of Refined Oil

Deodorization is a multi-step process comprising

FFA (As oleic acid) 0.1% max
MOISTURE 0.03% max
U.S.M. 3.5% max
COLOUR (In lovibond scale) 0.5 red max (1”cell)
TRANS FATS 1.5% max
ORYZANOL 10000 ppm min.
PEROXIDE VALUE Nil at the outlet
NOTE Cloud point shall be 0°c with winterization process.

Mectech’s Deodorization Advantage

  • Most efficiently designed oil to oil heat exchanger fitted in the tray of Deodorizer ensures minimum heat energy requirement.
  • Elaborate and efficient design of fatty acid scrubbing recovery system ensures virtually no carry over fatty acid into barometric condenser.
  • Most efficiently designed heating coil which prevents to charring of oil during the process.
