Hazelnut Oil Refining

Infused richly with oleic acid, Hazelnut oil is a clear, yellowish brown with an extremely nutty smell and taste. Usually pressed from pulverized hazelnuts (oil content 50-60%) (cold-pressed hazelnut oil), it is termedas virgin hazelnut oil. The bulk of hazelnut is either consumed in crude form or grinded in the form of baking ingredient or a chocolate additive, in confectionery and ice-cream. Though commonly used for cooking and in salad dressings hazelnut has enormous usage in the health & wellness industry. It finds excellent usage in hair care as well as a carrier oil for aromatherapy or massage oils. Roasted hazelnut oil's sweet taste and distinctive aroma makes it a desirable ingredient in the kitchen. It is very versatile on the kitchen table and is used in a large variety of salad dressings, particularly vinaigrettes and works wonderfully with citrus fruits, raspberries and other naturally sweet foods. Hazelnut oil is excellent for wellness and can be used to lubricate the skin during massage therapy sessions. Since it easily penetrates the skin tissue, it also acts as a moisturizer and ensures that the skinre mains soft and elastic. Process of Hazelnut oil Refining

After being extracted from seeds, hazelnut oil is obtained through a multi-stage process that can be physical or chemical process, but only physical process is carried out due to high FFA. This helps attains the desired qualities like taste, texture and color after the elimination of unwanted substances.

The multi-stage hazelnut oil refining process is as follows:


Degumming is the process to remove phospholipids. The latter are major impurities as they can lead to darker colored oil that tastes off -flavor. Degumming is undertaken concurrently to improve its physical stability and facilitate further refining. The process partially eliminates free fatty acids, pigments and other impurities. Mectech customizes degumming processes based on methods of processing, chemicals used and the content of phosphatides in the crude vegetable oil to achieve optimum results

Continuous Bleaching

Trace metals, dirt, color pigments, phospholipids, polycyclic aromatic compounds and numerous other impurities are eliminated through this process


Subsequently waxes and saturated glycerides, fairly visible at low temperatures are eliminated. The bleached oil is cooled followed by slow filtration of the saturated glycerides.

De-aeration & Deodorization

The materials removed by deodorization include free fatty acids (FFA); various flavor and odor compounds classified largely as aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, and hydrocarbons; and other compounds formed by the heat decomposition of peroxides and pigments

Deodorization is primarily a high-temperature, high-vacuum, steam-distillation process. To produce a high-quality finished product, each deodorizer performs the following efficiently manner:

  • Deaerates the oil, heat the oil to deodorization temperature, steam stripthe oil, and cool the oil before it is exposed to the atmosphere.
  • Thermal decomposition of certain minute, largely unidentified constituents and possibly removal of their decomposition products is necessary

Deodorization increases the oil's flavor and oxidative stability by nearly complete removal of FFA and other volatile odor and flavor materials, through partial removal.
