Canola Oil Refining

Being coronary positive, it enjoys global popularity and its consumption has become commonly used in industrialized nations- despite being a GM oil. Canola oil scores high for coronary health as it contains less saturated fat than any other oil commonly and is also very high in healthier unsaturated fats. It's higher in the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) that is important to intake in the diet as the body cannot manufacture it internally.

Refining Process of Canola oil

Canola oil needs to be refined before it can be consumed by human’s consumption. Post extraction, the crude raw material needs to go through several refining processes to remove the unwanted components before reaching the tables.

Some of the steps are:

  • Gums conditioning and neutralization
  • Bleaching
  • Deodorization

The Process

Gums Conditioning and neutralization

First, the non-hydratable phosphorous is converted into hydratable form by treating the crude with phosphoric acid in a retention tank. This acid mixed oil is treated with caustic soda lye in a separate retention vessel to accomplish neutralization of fatty acids as well as the phosphoric acid. After the specific retention time, a centrifugal separator separates the soap from the oil. Just after soap separation process oil is treated with Hot water to remove traces of soap in centrifugal separator Finally, vacuum extraction is used to separate the traces of water from the washed oil and for further processing, the dried oil is stored in neutral oil storage tank.


“Bleaching” selectively removes pigments and impurities by the physically reacting it with an adsorbent on an oil or fat. Thus, its quality is enhanced too. The process eliminates color pigments, dirt, trace metals, polycyclic aromatic compounds and phospholipids.

First, it is heated with steam and subsequently bleaching clay is added to the oil. Further, the oil is heated again in a separate heater, under vacuum conditions, the heated oil is then transferred to the bleaching reactor where sparging steam brings into contact the oil with the surface-active absorbent.

To obtain the processed oil after retention, it is filtered with filtering equipment that is custom designed to regulate the oil flow and bleaching earth mixer.


This effectively is the last step where basically steam is stripped.

The multi-step process comprises

  • De-aeration –Here air traces are eliminated employing sparging steam under high vacuum.
  • Pre-heating –The custom designed heater employs high vacuum to heat the oil with high-pressure steam or more commonly -thermal oil
  • Striping - Eliminates odoriferous compounds and fatty acids by using stripping steam.
  • Cooling –oil is cooled at this stage and dosed with anti-oxidants to obtain refined, edible, tasteful Canola oil.
